AMHERST - Can the Vikettes do it again?
Last year the ARHS girls slopitch team wasn't expected to go very far when it hosted the provincial championship, but the Vikettes went on to surprised all the doubters when they captured the provincial banner.
Today, the Vikettes begin the road to the provincials when they head to East Hants High School to take on Hants East and South Colchester in the Chignecto Central regional tournament.
"We lost eight of our starters from last year," said Vikettes coach Nick Porter. "So this is a rebuilding year for the team."
Though the team is in the rebuilding stage, they are not to be taken lightly.
"The girls have really come around the past few weeks, so we absolutely have a chance to do really well at this tournament," he added.
The teams will play a round-robin, then the top two will play in the final, with the winner advancing to provincials.
The team is comprised of two Grade 9 students and three Grade 10 students, with the rest coming from the Grade 11 and 12 ranks.
"The senior girls are really stepping up, even the ones who didn't play with us last year," said Porter.
"And the younger girls are playing really well. So we have a really nice mix that has the potential to go a long way."
