HALIFAX - Sir Paul McCartney is coming to Halifax.
The former Beatle will play a large outdoor concert on the city's Commons on July 11, it was announced Wednesday.
"Very happy to be playing Halifax," McCartney said on his website. "The Canadian audiences are great and the timing of the event, with the arrival of the tall ships, means that it will be an exciting event for us all."
"We are looking forward to rocking in Halifax."
Promoter Harold MacKay, president of Power Promotion Events, said McCartney chose the city as his only Canadian date this year.
A gathering of tall ships from around the world will take place in the city at the same time.
"With sales of over 100 million, Paul is listed by the Guinness World Records as the most successful musician and composer in popular music history," he said at a news conference.
"This iconic and legendary performer's presence in our city will be an historic event for all Atlantic Canadians."
MacKay said he expects about 60,000 people for the show on the Commons, a large recreational space in the heart of the city. Tickets go on sale May 29.
Premier Rodney MacDonald attended the news conference. His government gave a $300,000 grant through the Tourism, Heritage and Culture Department.
