TRURO - Deep Finesse, Atlantic Canada's 2008 Horse of The Year, stepped to a personal best of 1:53.3 in his sophomore debut Tuesday at Harrods Chester Raceway near Philadelphia, Pa.
Bred by Donald Porter of Belmont, the pacing son of Western Paradise won a qualifying race by one and one-quarter lengths as he made his first start for his new owner, Larry Baron of Horsham, Pa. Deep Finesse was sent to the front after the opening quarter of 28.2 and led the rest of the way through fractions of 56.4 (28.2), 1:25.3 (28.4) before pacing home in 28.2.
"His new owner seemed to be pleased with the mile," said Lower Onslow resident Phil Pinkney, who campaigned the colt last year when he won 15 of 19 races and set a Maritime record of $85,600 in earnings.
Pinkney sold the colt earlier this year for a reported $75,000.
Pinkney said Deep Finesse was expected to go another qualifying mile before he makes his first start. The colt has been nominated to several major races, including the North America Cup and The Meadowlands Pace, both million-dollar races.
