AMHERST - Table tennis can be a fun pastime but it can also be a very serious competition, requiring cat-like reflexes.
And cat-like reflexes will be needed Thursday when the Amherst Regional High School table tennis team travels to Antigonish for the Northumberland regional championships.
"We have six athletes going to the regionals," table tennis coach Duane Starratt said. "Three seniors and three intermediate players."
This is the first time ARHS has fielded a table tennis team and many of the kids are international students.
"Our three senior players are international students," Starratt said.
ARHS formed the team a little more than a month ago and they've been practising at lunch and sometimes after school.
We've had about 12 kids coming out for the practices and they've been having a great time," Starratt said.
The tournament lasts one day and only the top team in each division will advance to the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation championships May 9 in the Capital region.
