AMHERST - It was an impressive weekend for two local cheerleading squads as they both claimed the silver medal in the CheerExpo Nationals 2009 competition held in Halifax over the weekend.
For the Amherst Regional High School and E.B. Chandler Junior High teams, the feat was quite an accomplishment.
Sandra Cluett, who coaches the high school girls along with Elizabeth Dowe, said she was pleased with how the girls competed.
"The girls had a lot of fun," she said. "Even last week, the girls put in the most effort I've ever seen, and it was good to see them make that commitment."
The 14 females on the squad would practice a couple of times per week leading up to CheerExpo, where they competed in the Senior High B division with two other teams.
The rules set out for the NSSAF sanctioned sport says those teams established for two years or less register in Division B, while more experienced teams register with Division A.
Throughout the season, the team, who is looking for interested males but isn't able to find any, worked on conditioning, as well as aspects to the dance and stunt portions, said Cluett.
"(CheerExpo) was quite the thing. I was amazed at some of the advanced levels of the teams," said Cluett.
Coaching the E.B. Chandler team of 22 females, Joella Higgs said the two-point differential between the first place team and the E.B. Chandler team was "quite impressive."
"They were a brand new squad this year and none of them had any experience before this year," Higgs said, adding the team competed against three other teams that had more experience than they did.
"I'm so very proud of them. It's a very athletic sport and the girls worked very hard on all their stunts, pyramids, jumps, tumbling, motions and cheer."
