SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - A perfect round-robin showing would have been nice, but the Colleen Pinkney rink is eyeing a much bigger prize.
Pinkney had already secured first place and a berth in the women's final at the 2009 Canadian senior curling championships, before she dropped her round-robin finale 6-5 yesterday to Newfoundland and Labrador's Barbara Pinsent (6-5). It was the first loss of the tournament for Pinkney (10-1), who will face British Columbia's Kathy Smiley (9-2) who defeated Manitoba's Lois Fowler (9-2) 6-5 in last night's semifinal, in today's finale.
"I'm totally thrilled with the outcome," said Pinkney. "We would have loved to have gone undefeated. However, if we were to have a loss, it's better to have been today than tomorrow."
Pinkney, mate Wendy Currie, second Karen Hennigar and lead Susan Creelman planned to get some rest in preparation for today's final.
"We could have actually practised this afternoon and had that option, but we chose not to," said Pinkney. "We think the rest is important."
Pinkney said it will be status quo for Nova Scotia in the championship game.
"Our strategy won't change," she added. "We kind of use our instincts and you never know what you're going to get from us."
Against Newfoundland and Labrador, Pinkney admitted her rink struggled with the ice at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.
"The ice was a little bit different this morning," she explained. "You kind of had to put your draws there and it didn't slide as easily. The big curl would cause the rocks to dig in a little bit and we never really did quite catch on the ice as well today. And we just met up with a real hot team today. Newfoundland came out on fire and they made everything."
