Victoria Street

The new Lawtons Drugs building began taking shape Wednesday as a crew from A.W. Leil hoisted concrete walls throughout the day to be secured into place. Over the lunch hour, work was at a standstill until the crane was moved from Victoria Street onto Lawrence to continue work.

It's hard to believe how negative some people can be! Mega store! Have you ever shopped in Lawtons? The place is cramped and old! It needs an up-date. The Pharmacy is small not to mention the front counter for staff. I think its great!!! I'm sure they will expand the for rentals of equipment for people and who wants to go to two different stores when you can pick up your milk and bread when they get their meds.

Progress is always good. Some people have such small town mentality and think they KNOW that ths a bad idea and it will fail. Those people just refuse to recogonise that Amherst is growing becuase they are afraid of change and want their quiet little town to stay the same forever. Well, take a look around, Amherst is groing and going to continue to grow. Do some research, there's more than this building going up within the year.
Its good to see development in Amherst, will ensure people stay there or move there, even though that dosn't seem to be what some residents want

I don't understand why these companies persist in creating mega-stores. They obviously are not thinking of people who have mobility issues; now they will have to walk over twice as far to find what they want. And if this goes the way of the others it basically turns into a giant general store, so people we have gone full circle. And to be doing this in a recession? God bless the wee chemist's shop that has been in Amherst for ages - glad they are not expanding.

mary... have you ever tried to get through the two current downtown pharmacies with a wheelchair, or even a baby stroller? It's hard enough just *walking* through since a lot of things are displayed in the aisles. A nice, open looking pharmacy is welcome.
