YORKTON, Sask. - Brier champion Kevin Martin is off to a great start at the $150,000 Canada Cup of Curling. Runner-up Jeff Stoughton isn't doing too badly either.
Edmonton's Martin and Winnipeg's Stoughton improved to 2-0 with Draw 4 wins Wednesday in men's Canada Cup action.
Martin improved to 2-0 with a 9-7 win over reigning Olympic champion Brad Gushue of St. John's, N.L. Much like his Draw 2 win over Russ Howard, Martin had to come up big in the last ends to defeat Gushue.
After Gushue scored two in the eighth end to take a 7-5 lead, Martin replied with a deuce in the ninth and then stole another two in the 10th.
Gushue fell to 1-1
Martin's needed a steal of two in the ninth end and one in the 10th to overcome Howard's Moncton, N.B., rink in his first win.
Martin was coming off a spectacular Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary, where he went undefeated for the second year in a row while setting a Brier-record unbeaten streak of 26 games. He beat Stoughton in the final.
Stoughton beat Toronto's Wayne Middaugh 5-2 in Draw 3. After Stoughton stole one in the ninth the teams shook hands. Middaugh fell to 1-1.
Earlier Wednesday, Stoughton defeated defending Cup champion Kevin Koe of Edmonton 7-5.
In the other Draw 3 men's game, Winnipeg's Kerry Burtnyk improved to 1-1 with a 7-4 win over Edmonton's Randy Ferbey (1-1).
In women's Draw 3 action, Amber Holland of Kroneau, Sask., joined Mary-Anne Arsenault and Marie-France Larouche at 2-0 with a dramatic 10-8 win over Saskatoon's Stefanie Lawton. Holland scored three in the 10th to tie the game, then stole two in the extra end to win.
Lawton fell to 0-2.
In the other women's match, Calgary's Shannon Kleibrink needed just six ends to hammer Regina's Michelle Englot 9-3. Both rinks are 1-1.
