VANCOUVER Canadas Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir climbed right back to the top in their return to the international stage.

Virtue, from London, Ont., and Moir, from Ilderton, Ont., finished first in the compulsory dance program Wednesday at the ISU Four Continents figure skating championships, scoring 36.40 points for their performance of the Finnstep.

Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White were second with 35.23, while Vanessa Crone of Aurora, Ont., and Paul Poirier of Unionville, Ont., finished third with 32.43.

Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo, Ont., were fifth with a score of 30.62.

Virtue and Moir, who won the Four Continents last year in South Korea, were making their international season debut. The two skipped the Grand Prix season in the fall and early winter as Virtue was recovering from surgery on both her legs to alleviate compartment syndrome. They only stepped on the ice together about eight weeks ago.

Later Wednesday, Jessica Dube of Drummondville, Que., and Bryce Davison of Cambridge, Ont., led three Canadian teams in the pairs short program. And Joannie Rochette of Ile-Dupas, Que., the defending Four Continents silver medallist, was among three Canadians in the ladies short program.

The Four Continents at the Pacific Coliseum is one of several test events of Olympic venues that are being staged as Vancouver prepares for its one-year countdown to the Games on Feb. 12.
