AMHERST - The heat and humidity could be cut with a knife as fighters from throughout the Maritimes packed into Amherst's Havoc MMA for Saturday's grappling tournament.
"We had about 100 spectators and competitors attend the competition," event organizer Tim Skidmore said. "It was way more than we expected, so we were very pleased with the turnout."
Mixed martial arts continues to attract many converts to the sport and Skidmore was pleased to see a lot of new faces.
"We had people from Miramichi, Summerside, Kentville, Pictou County and Halifax, so there were faces I hadn't seen before, especially a lot of young fighters."
The event was refereed by Strickland and Extreme Cage Combat's Canadian lightweight champion Jason Mackay.
There was no striking allowed in the strictly grappling tournament and Mackay was featured on the final match of the day.
"Jason's an outstanding grappler. He's about as big of a fighter as you can get in the Maritimes, and he was very exciting to watch," Skidmore said.
Skidmore hopes to hold another grappling event soon.
"I received a lot of positive feedback and I hope everybody was entertained," Skidmore said.
