County teams lose championships

BROOKDALE - It was a tough tournament for the basketball girls from Cumberland North Academy and Pugwash over the weekend as they Antigonish went on to win the banner.

The Antigonish Royals walked away with the Cumberland North Academy Invitational Mini Girls Championships on Sunday, defeating the Bedford Eagles, 40-33.

Pugwash finished the championships in fourth place, while the host team finished sixth.

In Pugwashs first game, Justine Benjamin lead the scoring with 20 points, helping to defeat Sackville, 47-46.

Alanna Stevens followed closing behind with 17 points, while Kyrsten Bennett had six and August Carter had four.

Pugwash lost its second game, 28-41, against Antigonish, with Stevens netting 12 points for the Panthers, Benjamin scoring six, and Toni Wilson, Chy-Anne Stillman, Stephanie Bennett, Kyrsten Bennett, and Carter each picking up two points.

Pugwashs final loss came at the hands of F.H. MacDonald, 26-20.

Stevens picked up nine points for Pugwash, while Wilson, Stillman, Stephanie Bennett, Kyrsten Bennett and Kayla Tuttle each had two and Carter had one.

Cumberland North Hawkes lost their home opener, 24-43, against F.H. MacDonald, with Mia Furlong leading the way with eight points.

Lauren Chitty and Gina Gratton each netted four points, while Darrah Legere, Rachelle Cheverie, Cayce Laird and Reaghan Collins each picked up two.

The Hawkes first win of the tournament came against Truro on Saturday, 35-14.

Chitty lead the Hawkes with 14 points, followed by Furlong with 10, Mallory Rushton eight, Cayce Laird two and Hannah Clarke one.

Cumberland Norths final game was a loss to Sackville, 19-27.

Chitty and Gratton each scored five points for the Hawkes. Furlong netted four, Rushton and Alisha Christie each had two and Clarke had one.

The next tournament for both the girls and boys teams will be Feb. 20-22 and Feb. 27-March 1, respectively, when they face off in the Cumberland and Westmorland Counties league tournaments held in Amherst.
