AMHERST - While many people were out shopping for last minute Christmas gifts last night, the athletes at the Amherst Aerials Gymnastics Club were hard at work in preparation for the upcoming season of competition.
"Out first competition is the Prince Edward Classic on Jan. 23-25," said instructor Michelle Landry. "So we are looking forward to that and hopefully we will peak at the right time."
The competitive class has 11 girls and two boys.
Margaret Skabar and Lyndsay Butler, stalwarts on last year's team, did not return this season but Landry said they still have a close-knit team.
"It's always hard when girls leave," Landry said. "But we have a couple of returning girls and most of the team has been together a long time so I think we'll do well."
Veteran gymnast Samantha Landry said she is ready to compete.
"I wasn't even training at this time last year so I'm already ahead of the game," she said.
Registration for recreational and competitive gymnastics will open early in the new year.
