Good use found for recent snow

Jason Malloy - WENTWORTH - The hills came alive with the sounds of skiing here Tuesday as Nova Scotia's largest ski hill opened for the season.
With school out and some people off for the Christmas holidays about 300 people visited the slopes.
"It's so awesome," said Renato Estevam, a Brazilian exchange student completing his second semester at Cobequid Educational Centre. Last winter "I tried snowboarding but I wasn't that good, but now I'm training every day."
Some people at the hill have been skiing for years and couldn't wait for opening day.
Ron McKenna, of Dartmouth, said he rents a cottage in Wentworth and spends as much time as he can on the slopes.
"I just came up from New England and they have a ton of snow down there but it wasn't any better than this," he said.
"They had that ice storm about a week ago so basically the hills are coated in ice."
The Sissy and Rosebowl were the only trails open yesterday at Ski Wentworth but patrons were just happy to be able to work out their legs.
The mini terrain park was also open and was where John Schmidt was practicing his moves.
"This is my first year," said the 17-year-old Dartmouth resident. He and his friends set up some rails near their homes using snow from skating rinks.
"We've been hitting those ... but it's nice to be on the mountain," the skier admitted.
Leslie Wilson, general manager at Ski Wentworth, said it was "huge" to be able to open before the holidays.
"That's always our goal to get open before Christmas. It's a real important time for us when people are off work and off school and they have the time to come out and enjoy skiing," she said.
The Christmas holidays are among the three important periods for the hill. Late January-early February and March Break are the others.
"We're off to a great start and we're just thrilled with today," Wilson said after returning from a couple of trips down the slopes.
The hill will be open today, closed on Thursday and reopening on Friday.
