Earltown -A newly constructed wilderness trail in Earltown will officially open this weekend.
Rogart Mountain Trail, a Cobequid Eco-Trails Society project, was constructed by volunteers and is a vital link in a long-term vision to complete a 400-kilometre long footpath spanning from Cape George, Antigonish County to Cape Chignecto, Cumberland County.
The grand opening will be hosted Sunday at Sugar Moon Farm located on the Alex MacDonald Road. It will begin with a welcome and presentations at 10 a.m., followed by guided or non-guided trail tours at 10:30 a.m.
Lunch will be available at the pancake house at 12:30 p.m.
The new trail is a 6.2 km loop that begins and ends at the Sugar Moon Farm parking lot. It will take about two-and-a-half hours to complete and a certain level of fitness is needed to navigate the trail.
Hikers are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and clothing, as well as bright hunter orange during white-tail deer hunting season that ends Dec. 6. Trail conditions will be posted on the Sugar Moon Farm website, www.sugarmoon.ca
Dogs are permitted on the Rogart Mountain Trail but must be on a lead at all times and owners must pick up after them.
Dogs are not allowed on Sugar Moon Trails because it is a working farm with working livestock, protection dogs and electric fences.
