Panthers seeded first
Milford - The Pugwash Panthers Girls Volleyball Team is seeded first going into Division 4 Regionals. The top seeding came as a result of a strong showing by the Panthers in recent play.
On November 14 and 15, the Panthers attended a tournament at Hants East Rural High School where they defeated a much-improved North Colchester team 2-0 in their first match.
In their second match, the Panthers beat the spirited host team 2-0 in a hard fought battle.
In the third match, the Panthers split with Lockview 20-25 and 25-23 to decide first place in their pool. Using the tiebreak rule, Lockview clinched first place based on points differential.
This resulted in Pugwash coming up against a tough North Nova team in the crossover round, where they lost 2-0.
On November 7th, the Panthers travelled to Canso to participate in a tournament.
In the opening match, they defeated North Colchester 2-0.
The next match was against the highly motivated host team, and Canso won the first game by a wide margin.
Canso also led in the second game, but the Panthers fought back to win 26-24, and followed this up with a 15-8 win in the rubber match.
To complete the round robin, the Panthers took on the favourites, and defending Regional champions, from St Marys Academy.
Both teams were undefeated and guaranteed a spot in the final, so the teams were playing only for pride and Pugwash won 2-0.
In the final, Pugwash won the first game 25-20.
St Marys came back and trounced the Panthers 25-5 in the second game.
Pugwash got off to an early lead, and coasted to a 15-6 win in the deciding game and captured the championship.
Tournament All-Stars included Jessica Copp and Courtney Matthews of the Panthers, along with Alicia Morrison from North Colchester.
Seeding for regionals, to be hosted by the North Colchester Mustangs on Thursday, Nov. 20 are Pugwash (first), St Marys (second), Canso (third), North Colchester (fourth), Parrsboro (fifth) and Indian Brook (sixth). Pool A, consisting of Pugwash, Canso and Indian Brook, will play their preliminary round at Pugwash District High School. Pool B, consisting of St Marys, North Colchester and Parrsboro, will play their preliminary round at North Colchester High School.
