AMHERST - The Amherst Regional High School Vikings were winners in their home opener last night, beating the Pugwash Panthers 68-58.
"I thought the boys did a good job of playing up-tempo basketball. That's what we wanted to do," Vikings head coach Reg Caulfield.
Scoring for the Vikings were Dwayne Ripley with 24 points, Ryan Budd with 16 points, Kevin Lepage with eight, Ryan Oake with six, Richard Hope and Nick Smith with four apiece, C.J. Curtis and Sammy Mohamad with two each and Bryson MacDonald and Patrick Neufeld each had a single point.
The Vikings lost two out of three games at a North Colchester tournament this weekend, but Caulfield said that with a young team, that's to be expected.
"We did a better job tonight with our shot selection," Caulfield said. "But our weak area is our court awareness. It's a timing issue, knowing where to be at the right place at the right time."
Caulfield wants his team to improve from one game to the next.
"The bottom line is we're improving and that's what's important," Caulfield added.
The Vikings are back in action tonight against Oxford. The game begins at 8 p.m. at ARHS.
