Vikings lose two of three in opening tournament

AMHERST - The Amherst Regional High School Vikings lost 85-72 to one of the top Division 2 seeds in the province in action at the North Colchester High School Basketball Tournament here Saturday.
Dwayne Ripley scored 24 points for Amherst against the tough New Waterford Bears while Richard Hope scored 17 points and Ryan Budd had 16. Also scoring for Amherst were Kevin LePage with nine points, Ryan Oake with four and Bryson MacDonald with two.
"We learned a lot from this game," coach Reg Caulfield said. "The players know that we can compete at this level but need to improve our intensity every possession, play at a higher pace and be able to finish in traffic."
Amherst opened the event with a 67-55 loss to North Colchester with Budd scoring 17 points and LePage adding 13 for the Vikings. Ripley with 10, Oake with eight, Hope with seven and MacDonald and Sammy Mohamad with one each also scored.
In their other game, Amherst defeated Sacred Heart High of Halifax 63-60 with MacDonald earning player of the game honours with a 13-point performance.
Oake with 10, Hope with nine, Ripley and Dylan Rushton with seven each, Nick Smith and C.J. Curtis with five each, Budd with four and Mohamad with two and LePage with one also scored.
Amherst returns to action tonight when they host Pugwash District High in their home season-opener. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
