AMHERST - The Amherst Skating Club is off to another strong start.
"We've had two season openers so far this season and the girls have done very well," club coach Shelley Polley said.
Club membership is up this year.
"We have more numbers and we have a number of young skaters who show lots of potential and promise. They are very enthusiastic," Polley added.
"It's a nice group of kids."
Though the numbers are up, they are still accepting new members.
"The door is always open to new people," Polley said. "It's a great place for kids to exercise, be creative and a good place to be challenged."
She also points to seasoned veterans Haley Speight and Jennifer Porter as stabilizing forces in the Amherst Skating Club.
Speight and Porter volunteer their time to the club every Monday and Wednesday for 18 weeks a year.
"They are very supportive and show the younger skaters the ropes," Polley said. "The young girls look up to them. They are leaders and role models for the younger girls."
With only two tournaments under their belt, the Amherst Skating Club still has a lot of skating ahead.
"I think we'll do very well this year," Polley said. "The girls love what they do.
"The best is yet to come."
