AMHERST - Seven swimmers kick-started their season with a day's worth of events at the provincial pentathlon meet at the end of October at Dalhousie.
"The pentathlon offers the swimmers a chance to swim five sprint events, plus a distance event," coach Jan Matthews said. "It offers a chance to assess where each swimmer is at the start of the season."
Most of the best times held by the Spartan swimmers were recorded at the provincial championships last season.
"This competition is a good indication of their level of training if they meet or are close to setting personal bests," Matthews added.
Meagan Kindervater recorded personal best times in the 50-metre backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley events.
Marcus Kindervater earned best time ribbons for his 50 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 100 IM swims.
Also swimming in the 11-12 age category, Erika Ferguson swam best times in the 50 butterfly and 100 IM.
New swimmer Brittany Kane collected personal-best ribbons in the 50 breaststroke and 100 IM events.
Emily Matthews earned top-10 finishes in all five of her events, recording a new personal best in the 100 IM.
Hannah Thompson improved her times in the 400 freestyle and 100 IM.
Sarah Gloade came within a second of her personal bests in the 100 freestyle, backstroke and IM events.
The team is gearing up for the coming swim season with regular practices most afternoons at the Cumberland YMCA.
