CHESTER, N.S. _ A kayaker who fell into frigid waters off Nova Scotia's south shore managed to swim to safety, and was rescued early this morning after being spotted by a Cormorant helicopter.

The joint rescue co-ordination centre started a search for the 47-year-old man, after he failed to return from a paddle around Tancook Island.

At about 1 a.m. the rescue centre reported ``a happy resolution' to the search, when the shivering man was spotted on Lynch Island.

RCMP say the man's kayak overturned in rough seas near the island and he swam to shore.

Police say the kayaker suffered from minor exposure, but he was in good condition.

He was reunited with his family a short time after being rescued.
