TATAMAGOUCHE - Colchester County Coun. Jimmie LeFresne is calling for immediate action to re-open a vital link on the Trans-Canada Trail.
This week the Department of Natural Resources closed a bridge on the recreational trail spanning the French River Bridge because of safety concerns.
"I do realize safety comes first but restricting all access is overkill, especially to walkers," he said.
"If they feel the bridge is going to fall if someone is walking on it then I'm sure the river will have to be closed as well.
"People kayak under it, or canoes or pleasure boaters go under it or in the winter the snowmobiles go under it."
He applauds the efforts of the volunteer Tatamagouche and Area Trails Association for its work in maintaining the resource for a multitude of users.
He said the community is in a position to experience a boost in tourism because of a recent TV production filmed in the village and the trail is an important asset that needs to be open to traffic.
There are also economic repercussions of the closure.
"If this trail is not opened for the upcoming fall season for ATVs and for snowmobilers in the winter it will have an impact on gas stations and restaurants in this area."
