SAINT JOHN - Gold Cup and Saucer winner Pownal Bay Matt fought off a deteremined Country Estate for the last half mile and emerged with a half-length victory in the $8,000 ANE Invitational at Exhibition Park Raceway on the final dash of ANE Week racing.

Earl Smith drove the five-year-old Matts Scooter-Take The Sister stallion to a 1:55.3 victory for owner Ian Smith of Pownal, Pe., setting a seasons record at the New Brunswick racetrack.

Paul Grays St Pete Star, in rein to Danny Romo, drove in for the show money, nipping Lakota Hall (Walter Cheverie), who had taken the field to the opening quarter of 28.3 before yielding to Pownal Bay Matt.

PJ Bestman, back from a fling on the Woodbine Entertainment Circuit, was fifth for Todd Trites, beaten by seven lengths.

Outlawpositivcharg, Henschke A and Samspace, who made a costly break leaving, rounded out the field.

Smith, who had driven Pownal Bay Matt to a 1:53.4 victory in the 49th running of the Gold Cup and Saucer on Aug. 17, got away to sit third as Lakota Hall used his rail post to grab the early lead from Terry Gallant with the Governors Plate winner Outlawpositivcharg.

Earl wasnt waiting long, he had the 1:51.1 record performer out and moving before the half in 1:57.1, taking command of the racetrack.

But County Estate, the fastest Maritime-bred ever on a regional track, was out and moving for Gilles Barrieau, the ANE Weeks top driver and newly minted member of the 3,000 wins club.

Barrieau lost his cover when Pownal Bay Matt cleared quickly to the lead, but he kept Wes Patriquins Country Estate motoring on the outside to the 1:27.1 third quarter when he got a chance to tuck in briefly.

These two battled through the stretch with Pownal Bay Matt holding on for the three-quarter length victory, his third in six starts this year and the 12th of his career.

Pownal Bay Matt returned to the racing wars in mid-July after being on the shelf since last Janauary with a leg injury.
