SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - Alex VanSnick of Amherst held off a late charge by Ryan Mackintosh to win the rookie category by less than a half a second at the Atlantic Kart Racing Series event at Summerside's Credit Union Place on Sunday.
The racing all weekend was nothing short of magical, offering opportunities for all racers to shine in the Credit Union Place Grand Prix. And shine they did.
One of the most spectacular duels came in the Canada senior final as Colin Matheson of Springvale, P.E.I. overtook Gerald Caseley Jr. of Summerside in the final laps. Matheson then held off a strong challenge by Caseley to take his maiden win in the class.
Other notable challenges were Cameron Matheson of Brookfield holding off Josh Yeomans for second place for nearly 20 laps in the junior class, only to be overtaken with metres to go by a masterful stroke of tactical maneuvering from Yeomans, hauling himself between Matheson and winner Keegan Dobbelsteyn for second place.
In rotax max, it was all Caseley in qualifying 1, pre-final 1 and final 1, winning by more than 12 seconds over Nathan Kelly of Amherst.
Also of note was the return on track of Jonathan Stewart of Bayview from an incident during training the day before.
Nonetheless, he managed to race with a bandaged hand and pulled out a brace of third-places finishes in Canada senior.
The racing format inaugurated at the first Burlington race weeks earlier consisted of qualifying, pre-final and final heats, mirroring the national-event format.
