Robertson to compete at provincial championships in Sydney, May 31

Powerlifter eyes N. S. record

Amherst - Hes primed, hes pumped and hes ready to powerlift his way into the record book.

After almost two years of attempting to break the Nova Scotia bench press record of 467.5 lbs, Amhersts Nathan Robertson may have finally cracked the technical nut needed to crank out a record lift.

I unofficially broke the record on Wednesday night and hope I to set it officially at the provincial powerlifting championships on May 31, in Sydney, Robertson said.

Robertson has been training in powerlifting circles for 10 years now and only recently came upon a new training regiment that is paying dividends in spades.

Theres a powerlifting club in Ohio called Westside Barbell and I just pretty well follow what they say, Robertson said. They are right up on the latest science of powerlifting.

He recently broke his personal record in the squat with a lift of 590 pounds but says hes not so proud of his dead lift because, its only in the mid 500s, I hope to get that up closer to 600.

How high can Robertson take his bench press?

I think I can break 500 in the bench press, Robertson said.

Robertson spends two days a week training for bench press and two days a week training for the squat and the dead lift.

Hes said that with tenacity and perseverance anybody could become a competitive powerlifter.

I could probably take anyone and train them in six months to compete - thats if they were dedicated enough, Robertson said.

Robertson has qualified for the Canadian Championships several times but because of cost constraints he hasnt had the opportunity to attend.

Amherst Chiropractic sponsors me. Theyve done a lot of good things for me and they keep me in shape but I need more sponsors if I want to attend Canadian Championships, Robertson added.

Robertson said that between working at IMP and training for powerlifting he has little time for much else.

And he also trains for the Highland Games.

Im focusing on the competition in Sydney right now, Robertson said. But right after that Ill start training for the Highland Games on June 14, in Moncton.
