UPPER NAPPAN - Residents outside the county's major town are taking it upon themselves to try and establish a fitness centre for their own benefit.
The Fundy Fitness Association's chair made a presentation at county council in hopes of receiving their support in creating a River Hebert-based facility.
"What we're proposing to do is create a facility within an existing structure in River Hebert and meet a lot of the guidelines that are coming on from the province of Nova Scotia," Robert Beardsley said. "We read it in the paper every day that health and fitness is a priority for teens, as well as women, seniors and adult men."
Beardsley says the areas of River Hebert, Joggins and Maccan may have something that will work in the association's favour - declining enrolments in the schools.
"There might be a bright spot because most of our facilities are having space in them that is underutilized."
One of those spots is at the high school in River Hebert where the association would like to establish the facility.
Geographically, the residents in the rural communities are 25 to 30 km away from Amherst, where many large fitness centres are located.
