AMHERST - Just like the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants, the young Amherst Ramblers seem to thrive in the role of underdog.
On Friday the Ramblers defeated the top team in MJAHL, when they beat up the Woodstock Slammers.
And tonight they get to play the role of overachievers against the Yarmouth Mariners, the best team in the Bent Division.
"I think we play some of out best hockey against the top teams in the league," said Ramblers Coach Corey Crocker. "I think with all the hype that says these are the teams to beat, I think the boys accept it as a challenge and they want to show them that, yes we are young, but we are also very good."
The Ramblers are 1-1 on the season against a Yarmouth team that is full of experience.
"They have a number of guys from major junior who are 20 years old. They're a very skilled hockey club," said Crocker. "But when we play together as a team and care about one another and play for each other, we do great things ourselves."
Crocker says that to beat the Mariners they will have to play much like they did against Woodstock.
"We took their space away and they never had a lot of room to move out there," said Crocker. "We continued to forecheck and continued to stay in the lanes and continued to frustrate them."
The Ramblers have 12 games left in the regular season and they are just where they want to be.
"We had goals coming into the season and with such a young team you have to be realistic and work toward those goals," said Crocker. "Sometimes people put a lot of emphasis on the score, but as a coaching staff it's how we improve over the games. Although we've lost some games over the year, we have improved over those games and that's the direction we want to go."
The Ramblers have a bit of a break after tonight's game.
They will next face off against the Halifax Wolverines on Saturday night at the Amherst Stadium.
