McGee St. home gutted after grease fire

SPRINGHILL: It only took a split second for disaster to strike and put a Springhill man out of his house and home.
Springhill and Oxford fire departments responded to Kevin Lewis' McGee St. home last week on Tues, Jan 8, after fryer grease ignited and caught the surrounding walls into flames. Lewis, who was cooking a mid-afternoon meal for his son -who was not home from school at the time of the fire - received burns to his arms and head.
"I went to put the cover on and it just caught fire. It felt like it burned right through me," Lewis said as fire fighters cut a hole into the roof of the still smoldering home to spray water into the attic. "The only thing we lost was a pet gerbil."
But as the scene unfolded and the fire was brought under control Lewis began to realize the magnitude of what had just happened to him and his family. More so, the ramifications of not having home insurance were to have on his life.
"We just had Christmas. I've lost my tools, everything," Lewis said.
Lewis' home experienced a flu fire, he says, a number of years ago at which point he didn't see much from his insurance provider and after that incident he couldn't afford the inflated cost of home insurance any longer. Doing what he could he spent$1,000 upgrading his woodstove and kept his home in a constant state of improvement using his own skills and labour, he says.
When the house became consumed in flames Lewis had only seconds to remove a few vehicles from his yard. When the Springhill Fire Dept. arrived on the scene moments later one side of the home was fully engulfed in flames and spreading throughout the building.
A fundraiser for Lewis has been scheduled to take place at the Lamp Cabin this weekend.
