PARRSBORO - After a successful showing last year, the Parrsboro Skating Club is hoping to send even more skaters to provincials this year.

The club is holding a registration night at the arena on Friday, Oct. 12, and will be hitting the ice for another season on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

After finishing with a provincial bronze medal with the synchro (precision) team at the pre-novice level last year, coach Deborah Mitton is looking to build on that this year.

"We're looking for more people, and we're especially recruiting for the synchro teams to go to provincials at the juvenile and novice levels," she said. "We have about 16 doing it now, and I'd like to have about 24."

Many clubs don't even offer the synchro program, which sees numerous skaters performing the same routine - speeds, dances, lifts, etc. - at the same time. It makes for something to watch.

"It's something to choreograph too," said Mitton, who said participants could be boys or girls between the ages of 10 and 20.

Although the Parrsboro club has had a synchro team for years, last year was the first time they went to provincials.

It was one of many highlights of a busy year for the club, which saw 22 skaters training in ice dancing with Ross Clark, an adult skater in the club and former adult preliminary Canadian dance champion Clark is one of the clubs volunteer assistant coaches.

Nine members also skated during the summer; some skating in Antigonish and others in Halifax, and many lived with Mitton during the summer camp-like experience.

"I had my house full," she said. "We had a fantastic summer."

The Parrsboro club, which has its own costume designer tailor-making costumes for the skaters, practices every Tuesday evening.

For those interested in registering or obtaining more information, come out to the registration night on Oct. 12 or call either Deborah Mitton at (902) 843-2973 or Marlene Yorke at 254-3033.

Registration will take place at the arena on oct. 12 from 3 to 5 p.m., and the afternoon will include a family skate from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
