SPRINGHILL - Deborah MacPhail loves to swim, especially when it's for a good cause.

The academic chair at Nova Scotia Community College's Cumberland Campus in Springhill is one of 25 team members from the college traveling to Greece later this month to NSCC Swim for the College, a fund-raiser in support of scholarships and bursaries for students applying to the college.

"I love to swim anyway, and thought it would be an excellent opportunity to support future students of the college," said MacPhail. "It seemed like a great idea to show my support for growing the college and providing the skills training to help students find great jobs."

The inaugural event is a unique opportunity for friends, students, leaders, employees and alumni of NSCC to show their support for students. Each swimmer must raise a minimum of $6,000 in order to go, and MacPhail said she still has plenty to raise before the departure date of Sept. 27.

She is selling tickets on a quilt, taking donations and is planning a community yard sale to take place near the NSCC site in Amherst. Anyone wishing to donate items for the yard sale is encouraged to contact Deborah MacPhail at 664-6166.

Meanwhile, she is preparing herself for the swim, which will take place in five-kilometre stretches between the Greek islands. She has been a regular visitor to the pool at the Cumberland YMCA lately.

"I'm getting a little nervous because I'm swimming as much as I can, and trying to swim five kilometers at a time, but it's getting down to the wire and I'm wondering how I'm going to do," she said.

All the money raised will go to the NSCC Foundation, a registered charity, while the swimmers will pay for transportation costs themselves. For more information about the swimmers, or to donate, visit www.nscc.givemeaning.com.
