AMHERST - Members of the Cumberland YMCA will get an update tonight on what the organization's board of directors is doing to keep the cash-strapped facility open.

The YMCA has scheduled a membership meeting for 7 p.m. at the Church Street facility to provide an update on the board's activities over the last six months and discuss the organization's future.

"We're going to discuss the situation with the members and get their help and input on how we should proceed as an association," YMCA interim CEO Divya Minocha said Monday.

Since the YMCA went public with its financial situation several weeks ago, Minocha and board chair Bob Nixon have been talking informally to YMCA members. A letter was sent out to the membership last week outlining the situation and asking for patience and support through what has been a difficult time for the organization.

Minocha said the support and co-operation the board has received from the membership so far has been great. She said members want to keep the YMCA open and board members are confident that support will continue.

As the organization prepares to meet its membership, the board is just putting the finishing touches on a financial plan to send to the town. Officials from the YMCA met with representatives from the Town of Amherst and the Municipality of Cumberland nearly two weeks ago to discuss the situation and the town and YMCA set a deadline of a week to put together a plan that would show how the facility can be viable.

Minocha said the plan is nearly complete and should be provided to the town before the end of the week. The town has yet to make a commitment to the facility but has indicated a willingness to work with YMCA officials to keep the building open.

The town already provides about $60,000 annually in direct funding and in-kind services. The YMCA has operated the town's summer swim program since it closed the Dickey Park pool several years ago.
