Bertrand Lemeunier is making his own wish come true.

In the process, he's looking to fulfill many more.

Lemeunier, a Lyon, France, native now living in Montreal, started on a journey from St. John's Newfoundland two months ago in an effort to pedal to British Columbia to raise money for the Children's Wish Foundation. He stopped in Amherst yesterday.

"This project is like a dream for me. If I can help other people towards their wishes at the same time, everybody wins," he said.

"When you're on your bike, you can stop anywhere. I can go anywhere on my bike. It's a fantastic sense of freedom."

His goal is simple: a dollar a kilometre.

So far the 27-year-old photojournalist has travelled 4600 kilometres, raising $6000 along the way.

He expects he won't make it to Vancouver until the end of the year or early January 2008. He's not worried about getting cold when he travels through the prairies in December.

"The weather turns so fast with global warming and different things, we never know what kind of weather we will have," he said.

Lemeunier is collecting pictures along his expedition in plans of putting together a book to raise money for the foundation even after this project.

Children's Wish Foundation Amherst sub-chapter volunteer co-ordinator Jennifer Dempsey said wishes might not come true without the help of people like Lemeunier.

"For people like Bertrand that are devoting this much time and energy to single-handedly help raise money to grant wishes to sick kids, it's absolutely amazing," she said.
