The Swift Current Broncos defeated the last-place Lethbridge Hurricanes in the midst of a heated playoff race

The Swift Current Broncos got the job done against the last-place Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday. There were some missteps along the way but the Broncos emerged with a 7-4 win to hand the Hurricanes their ninth consecutive loss.

The Broncos scored three goals over the opening 12:53 to chase Jonny Hogue from the Lethbridge goal after making just seven saves on 10 shots. Defenseman Julius Honka scored twice and Graham Black added his 30th of the season over a 5:50 stretch for the Broncos.

The Hurricanes answered admirably though with a goal from Lenny Hackman, a shorthanded marker from Jamal Watson, and the tying goal from Carter Folk to even it up 3-3 after one period.

The Broncos regained the lead with a goal from Andrew Johnston and a power play goal from Dillon Heatherington to lead 5-3 after two periods.

Jake DeBrusk netted his 14th of the season for the Broncos early in the third period before Michal Holub replied for the Hurricanes to make it 6-4. Captain Colby Cave sealed the win with a shorthanded empty net goal with eight seconds left on the clock.

Black finished with three points, while Brycen Martin and Jay Merkley also had two-assist games.

Landon Bow made 26 saves to improve to 11-5-2-1 for the Broncos. Teagan Sacher made 28 saves on 31 shots to drop to 4-13-0-1 in his relief appearance.

The Broncos remain sixth in the Eastern Conference as they improved to 32-24-3-6, while Lethbridge fell to 12-50-2-3.

The Broncos are back at home Sunday for their third game in as many nights when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Bronco Bits: DeBrusk, 17, now has goals in three straight games with five points during that stretch. Merkley extended his point streak to four games. Black now has a goal and nine assists during a four-game point streak. A crowd of 2,270 were on hand for a chance to win a new car. 10-year-old Rylan Hildebrandt won the 2013 Ford Mustang from Cypress Motors.
