Overage forward Graham Black scored three goals in a 4-3 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Graham Black's hat trick lifted the Swift Current Broncos to a 4-3 win over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers Friday.
Black compiled his first career Western Hockey League hat trick with three very different goals.
Black tied the game 1-1 when he stripped the puck down low and walked out and jammed the puck home midway through the opening frame. He put the Broncos ahead 3-2 midway through the third period when he caught Marek Langhamer leaning out around a screen and fired the puck into the open part of the net. The overage forward added an insurance goal with 2:03 left in the third period when he drove the net and tapped home a Jay Merkley feed for the eventual game winner.
The Tigers wouldn't go away quietly as Cole Sanford scored his second goal of the game only 26 seconds later to set up an exciting finish.
Dillon Heatherington, with his fifth goal of the season, also scored for the Broncos during a two-point night. Alex Mowbray also scored for the Tigers.
Eetu Laurikainen earned the win with 30 saves to improve to 17-13-0-5 in the Swift Current goal. Langhamer stopped 34 of 38 shots to fall to 13-8-2-0 for the Tigers.
Black now has 26 goals, surpassing his total of 24 last season. He currently sits fifth in WHL scoring with 68 points in 49 games and has nine points during his current five-game point streak.
The Broncos improved to 26-18-2-6 and now sit one point back of Medicine Hat in the Eastern Conference standings as the Tigers dropped to 29-18-3-0. The win moved the Broncos past the Brandon Wheat Kings for top spot in the East Division and back into the second seed in the conference.
The Broncos will be right back at home Saturday when they host the Prince George Cougars at 7 p.m. at the Credit Union iplex. Members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Grey Cup will be at the game.
