Walsh out 4-6 weeks; Bottomley looks to add players early this week

AMHERST-The Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers rang in 2014 on a winning note, though their 7-3 victory over the Valley Wildcats came at a price.

“That was a cheap penalty,” said Ramblers head coach and GM Jim Bottomley. “Walsh was in a vulnerable position. He’ll probably be out four to six weeks.”

With the scored tied at two at 3:42 of the second period, Valley Wildcats defenseman Sheehan Kirkwood cross-checked Daniel Walsh. On the play, Kirkwood was assessed a five minute major penalty, notwithstanding a 10 minute game misconduct. The Amherst Ramblers scored on the ensuing power play.

“They could have lost control after Walsh got hit, but they maintained their composure, realizing the importance of the game. We’re not going to rush him back. We’re built for the playoffs, whether we finish the season in first or fourth.”

With the MHL trade deadline fast approaching, expect some new Ramblers soon.

“We’re hoping to have a couple things done by the start of the week,” said Bottomley.

As for Saturday’s game, overall, Bottomley was pleased with his team’s efforts.

“We came out good at the start, but we let them get back into it,” said Bottomley. “Some of our guys were only on the ice once over the Christmas break. Our goalie (Richard) Tingley kept us in the game early when we were getting outshot.”

Tingley stopped 30 of the 33 pucks that he faced, including several difficult saves.

“I thought that Bishop showed a lot of leadership tonight,” said Bottomley.

Bishop scored two goals and added an assist while Brock Morrison also scored two goals and added an assist of his own. Brett Shute added three assists, Cam McDonald had a goal and an assist while Serge Boisvert and Martin Ross each lit the lamp once. Rounding out the scoring for the Ramblers with one assist apiece were Robert Davis, John Deacon, Bruce Hornbrook and Kyle Beckwith.

Attendance for Saturday night’s game at Amherst Stadium was 652.

The Ramblers travel to Dieppe to face the Commandos on Thursday night before returning home Saturday night to face the CIBC Wood Gundy Lumberjacks.
