Broncos remain atop Eastern Conference with road win

The Swift Current Broncos won their third straight game Friday with  a 4-3 win over the host Brandon Wheat Kings to remain atop the Eastern Conference standings.

Andrew Johnson's goal with 6:24 remaining in the second period held up as the game winner as the Broncos now have five of a possible six points in three games versus Brandon with the road team winning each time.

Dakota Odgers got the Broncos out to an outstanding start when he scored his first Western Hockey League goal only 13 seconds after the opening face-off.

John Quenneville and Richard Nejezchleb quickly replied for Brandon for a 2-1 lead after one period.

The Broncos replied with three straight goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. Cavin Leth scored his second of the season and Colby Cave scored his team leading 18th before Johnson scored his fourth of the season.

Rihards Bukarts replied for Brandon in the second period to make it 4-3 before a scoreless third period.

Eetu Laurikainen  made 38 saves to improve to 11-9-0-2. Jordan Papirny got the start for Brandon and took the loss with 15 saves on 19 shots over two periods to fall to 9-8-2-0. Curtis Honey stopped all seven shots he faced in the third period in relief.

Swift Current continues to lead the Eastern Conference with a 19-11-0-3 record, while Brandon dropped to 15-14-2-0.

The Broncos are off until Tuesday when they host the B.C. Division leading Kelowna Rockets (20-3-0-2).

Bronco Bits: Graham Black had two assists in his fourth straight multi-point outing with 10 points over that stretch. The overage forward is seventh in league scoring with 43 points in 31 games. Cave, 19, added an assist for his third straight multi-point effort and now has seven points over a four-game point streak. Jay Merkley also added two assists and now has six points during a three-game point streak. The Broncos did not score in any of their three man-advantage and are now two-for-16 on the powerplay over the last eight games. Brandon was one-for-five on the powerplay. The Broncos improved to 13-2-0-2 against East Division opponents.
