SPRINGHILL – Coming off a three game loss last weekend, the Cumberland County Blues returned to Junior B Hockey action Friday night for their home game against the Glace Bay Miners.

After the Mariners scored two goals in the first period, the Blues gained momentum and scored two of their own, ending the first period with a tie score of 2-2.

The Miners continued their lead, scoring two more goals before the Blues earned their third goal, scored by Devon Despres, with Serge Boisvert and Jessie McGarvey earning assists. Although Blues’ coach Rob McLure said the team worked hard, the Blues didn’t manage the win as the Miners scored two more goals, finishing the game with a final score of 6-3.

“I was pleased with my call up to Despres and MacGarvey from the Jr. C Colts,” said McLure. “They got regular ice time and Despres scored.”

The Blues may not have won, but McLure said he was pleased with the commitment from players, Gil Murdock, Jon Tattrie and Zack Anderson.

“Every shift, they truly worked hard,” he said. “Overall, every player continued to do their part. Glace Bay has a nice team and we were within a goal of them with 10 minutes left to play. We came back twice in this game.”

McLure said he continues to remain optimistic about the Blues’ future.

“If we continue our efforts and my scorers bring their game Sunday against the Bulldogs, Glace Bay will have a battle on their hands in the playoffs,” he added.
