AMHERST – After taking an early lead, the Amherst Regional High School Vikings hockey team came out of their Friday home game victorious over the Bernice MacNaughton Highlanders with a final score of 2-0.

The Vikings brought in the first period’s only goal, only 1:40 into the period, scored by Kirk Hamilton unassisted.

“We came out strong,” said Vikings team manager Brad Skinner. “We seemed to dominate the play and then kind of seemed to sit back a little bit.”

The teams shuffled the puck back and forth, not earning any goals in the second period and most of the third until the Vikings sealed their win with a second goal 16:07 into the third period. Matthew Beal, assisted by Mitchell Speight, scored the goal.

Skinner said a lot of the game belonged to both goalies. He said they both worked hard and made a lot of great saves, creating a huge gap between goals.

“MacNaughton played very well and made a game of it,” he said. “We got a goal towards the end that gave us a bit of a push. Both goaltenders played very well. Evan MacKenzie made some great saves.”

The ARHS Vikings had 23 shots on goal compared to the Highlanders 21.
