Cumberland Blues take on the Strait Pirates on their home turff
SPRINGHILL – The Cumberland County Blues met the Strait Pirates on the ice Friday night at the Springhill arena.
The Blues had a pregame ceremony, retiring the jersey of No. 18 Jordie Shaw, now their assistant coach and then went out and defeated the Strait Pirates 2-1.
The Blues scored the first goal of the night during the first period. Jesse Colburne took in the goal, assisted by Tyler Gould. But, the Blues were outshot by the Pirates 11-6.
In the second period, Colburne took in his second goal, and the winning goal of the night for the Blues. His goal was followed by one for the Pirates, scored by Andrew Bowles, assisted by Evan Wright and Jarett Martell. The Pirates outshot the Blues 11-9.
The Blues held on to their lead all the way through the third period, finally bringing in a win. Friday night’s win puts the Blues one point behind the Antigonish Bulldogs for a playoff spot.
The Blues hit the road for their game in Glace Bay Saturday night at 6 p.m. Next Friday, the Blues will host the Glace Bay miners in Springhill at 7:30 p.m.
