SPRINGHILL – The Cumberland County Blues went toe-to-toe in Springhill Friday with the top-ranked Strait Pirates. The 5-4 victory for the visitors was decided in a shoot-out.
Only one goal was scored in the first period – by the Pirates – but the second and third periods were back and forth. Geoff Burke put up the first goal for Cumberland, at 15:05 in the second, answering a Pirates goal at 17:45. Then Jordie Shaw scored on the power play at 4:52 – a moment of triumph diminished when the Pirates put in their third just 13 seconds later.
Mike McClure tied up the score again with a goal at 12:49 in the third period. Then, once more, Jordie Shaw, at 11:40 – only this time short-handed. Not much time to celebrate, though, as the Pirates replied with a goal at 11:21.
The teams traded tries in the shootout after a goalless five-minute OT, but it was Lucas Eshleman of the Pirates who dealt the final blow (number two for him, having scored the second goal for the visitors also).
