Truro drops two of three weekend contests against league leaders

TRURO - The Truro Bearcats gave up four goals in the second period Sunday in Summerside and could not recover, losing 6-4 to the Western Capitals in Maritime Junior Hockey League action.

The Bearcats held a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes but found themselves trailing 6-4 after the second period in front of 941 fans.

"We came out pretty good. We really asserted ourselves off the bat, but they keep coming offensively," said alternate captain Brett Frazee.

"They did really well on their special teams and really capitalized on their chances."

Coach Shawn Evans said it was a carbon copy of the team's first game in Summerside, where Truro got the lead, but had nothing left in the tank, took some penalties and "by the time we catch our breath, the game's over."

While it was the third game in as many days for Truro, Evans said the Bearcats don't make excuses.

"That wasn't the team I'm accustomed to seeing. We're going to wipe that one off the slate and Monday's a new week," he said.

Kirk Rafuse was tagged with the loss after allowing five goals on 28 shots while Spencer Scott gave up a goal on the only shot he faced in the second period as Evans tried to regain momentum without burning a timeout.

Andrew Clouthier, Colin MacKinnon, Frazee and Travis Moore scored for Truro. Donnie Churchill had a pair of assists while singles went to Frazee, Clouthier, Dylan McGuigan and Jordan Mock.

Nathan DesRoches scored three times for Summerside.

Truro outshot the Capitals 30-29, including 13-5 in the third period.

Truro lost Friday night to the league-leading Woodstock Slammers before bouncing back with a victory on home ice Saturday against the basement-dwelling Dieppe Commandos.

The Bearcats (24-13-0-3) return to action Friday when they travel to Yarmouth to play the Mariners (24-19-1-0) before coming home to host Woodstock (32-6-2-4) Saturday and Pictou County (26-13-0-3) on Sunday.

The Bearcats scored early and often en route to a 10-1 victory.

Defenceman Sam Caldwell scored 3:36 into the first period and before the buzzer sounded to end the opening frame the Cats held a commanding 5-0 lead in front of 510 fans at Colchester Legion Stadium.

Mock had a pair of goals and a pair of assists to lead the offense. Caldwell added a pair while singles went to Jordan Cox, Stephen Horyl, Clouthier, Moore, Frazee and Alex Dalley.

Kendall MacInnis and Jordan Burke each had three assists while Andrew Kennedy and Dakota Johnson each had a pair. Cox, Evan Watts and Stephen Walker all had singles.

Rafuse stopped 26 saves for the win.

Doug Jessey scored the winner on the power play in the second period.

Horyl and Moore scored for the Bearcats while Watts had a pair of assists and singles went to Mock and Frazee.

Former Bearcat Alex Scola stopped 32 shots for the win while Scott was tagged with the loss despite making 24 saves.

"On a different night, that's our hockey game to win," Evans said. "I was very pleased the way we played."
