SPRINGHILL - The Cumberland County Blues downed the Pictou County Scotians 5-2 Friday night at the Richard Calder Arena.

The win puts them in second place in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League standings with 24 points, four points behind the league leading St. Margarets Bay Ducks.

The Blues went ahead 2-1 in the first period off goals from Seth Crowe and Zach Carson.

Assisting on the Crowe goal was Carson and Justin Landry, and assisting on the Carson goals was Matt Noiles and Jeff Deruelle.

The Blues scored three unanswered goals in the second period, going ahead 5-1.

Scoring for the Blues were Dave Burke, with assists to Geoff Burke and Jordie Shaw; Carson with his second of the night, off assists from Crowe and Deruelle, and a goal by Geoff Burke off passes from Shaw and his brother Dave.

The only goal scored in the third period was by the Scotians, giving the Blues a 5-4 win.

Nathan Kelly stopped 38 of 42 shots in net for the Blues, while his teammates fired 35 shots at Scotians goaltender Timmy Chasson.

The Blues are in Antigonish to face off against the Bulldogs on Friday night, and then on Sunday they visit the Windsor Royals, who, with 22 points, are just two points behind the Blues in the NSJHL standings.

The Blues return home Friday, Dec. 3 when they will host the Scotians at 7:30 p.m.
