SPRINGHILL - The Cumberland County Blues showed no rust after a 28-day layoff in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League, boosting their winning streak to 16 games by sweeping a home-and-home series with the Antigonish Bulldogs.
On Friday at Richard Calder Arena, former Amherst Ramblers forward Zach Carson made his Blues debut a memorable one with three goals and an assist in a 5-1 triumph on home ice. Cody Roach and Jesse Colborne also scored, and winning goaltender Andrew Court steered aside 19 shots.
On Sunday in Antigonish, Cumberland doubled up the hosts 6-3. Carson continued his torrid pace with a goal and three assists, and Jeff Deruelle and Ryan Oakley scored their first goals with their new club after coming over from the Glace Bay Miners in a trade earlier this month. Seth Crowe, Matt Noiles and Cole Wood also found the back of the net.
Tyler Ferdinand picked up the win between the pipes, stopping 21 shots.. The game was marred by a line brawl in the final 90 seconds after Ferdinand was bowled over, and suspensions are likely forthcoming for both clubs.
The Blues and Miners will play each other three times this coming weekend. Cumberland hosts Glace Bay at the Amherst Stadium on Friday at 8:30 p.m., and in Springhill on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 5 p.m. Glace Bay was to have hosted the Saturday and Sunday games but couldn't get ice time in its rink, and Cumberland offered to host and split the costs.
