AMHERST -- The Ramblers (8-6-0-1) ended a rough October on a positive note with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Miramichi Timberwolves (9-6-0-0) in Maritime Junior A Hockey League action Saturday night at the Stadium. The Ramblers were 3-6 this month after a 5-0-0-1 September.
Following is the live blog transcript:
7:45 p.m. -- Warmup is over. Scratches for Amherst are Jonathan Pardy (shoulder) and Kodi Estey (healthy). Not dressed for Miramichi are Chris MacNeil, Ben MacSwain, Jake Bullen and Brent Pierro.
Referee is Steve Starzomski. Starting goalies are Jon Waye for Amherst and Luke Gallant for Miramichi.
Only about 250 people here. No surprise given the Halloween festivities. Bad night to schedule games.
8:01 p.m. -- Puck has dropped and we're underway. First line for the Ramblers is Justin Matthews with Scott Bragg and Trevor Layton, with the usual top defence pair of Derek Smith and Eric Boudreau.
8:02 p.m. -- Ramblers not sure of their line combos tonight, as a botched change results in a too many men call 49 seconds in. Simon Bissonnette to serve.
8:04 p.m. -- Other defensive units are Ryan Matheson and Drew McLaughlin, and Wes Herrett and Brandon Mercer, with Yohann Mathieu as the seventh man.
8:05 p.m. -- Penalty over. T-Wolves with two shots on goal and a couple of near-misses.
8:06 p.m. -- Amherst with its first PP, as Marshall Ellis goes for holding at 3:15.
8:08 p.m. -- Scott Bragg showing no fear despite wearing a full cage to protect his broken jaw, as he runs over Kyle Lapenskie in front of the Ramblers bench.
8:08 p.m. -- Penalty over. Not much doing for the home side there.
8:09 p.m. -- Shane O'Byrne is slammed into the boards on a clean hit from Miramichi's Graham Dyck, but takes offence and goes after him. T-Wolves tough guy Graham Telford intercepts and lays the boots to O'Byrne, who is five inches shorter and at least 30 pounds lighter. Miramichi with the extra minor, as Telford gets two for roughing. All this at 5:44.
8:13 p.m. -- Penalty over. Ramblers with one shot on goal.
8:14 p.m. -- Ramblers other forward units are Bissonnette-Chapman-Barron, Orr-Carson-Coleman, and O'Byrne and O'Neill as the spares.
8:18 p.m. -- Jeremy Barron with a giveaway at the Amherst blueline and Miramichi thinks they've scored on a slapshot. Starzomski waves it off as the puck bounced out, but no usual clang of frozen rubber hitting metal, so the Ramblers might have got away with one.
8:21 p.m. -- Stretch pass springs Miramichi's Matt Milson on a partial breakaway, but Drew McLaughlin catches him in time and lifts his stick to disrupt a backhand attempt.
8:22 p.m. -- Minors to Amherst's Drew McLaughlin for roughing and Miramichi's Bobby Christie for interference at 13:44.
8:23 p.m. -- T-Wolves on the PP, with Mitchell O'Neill off for hooking at 14:10.
8:27 p.m. -- Penalty over. Ramblers with a lot of giveaways in their own end, but Miramichi is not capitalizing.
8:28 p.m. -- Sterling Bear and Kody Orr have dropped the mitts and are raring to go. Orr with some good shots early, but Bear with a late flurry. Call it a draw at 16:53. A win for Miramichi, though, to have Orr off the ice for the rest of the period.
8:31 p.m. -- Now it's Yohann Mathieu and James Williams at centre ice. Must be some bad blood from last weekend in Miramichi. Mathieu scores early, but Williams with a left that knocks Mathieu to the ice. This at 16:55.
8:32 p.m. -- Amherst on the PP, with Kris Keating called for hooking at 17:07.
8:34 p.m. -- Penalty over. Ramblers not getting pucks to the net.
8:35 p.m. -- First period over. Shots 10-8 Miramichi.
After 20 minutes -- Ramblers aren't doing much offensively, and if not for a lack of finish on the T-Wolves part, Miramichi would be up a goal or two.
8:50 p.m. -- Second period has begun.
8:54 p.m. -- Not much flow to begin this period. Lots of stops and starts.
8:56 p.m. -- Ramblers on the board. Drew McLaughlin with a burst of speed into the Miramichi zone and feeds Simon Bissonnette charging hard to the net for the tip-in at 3:21. Second assist to Adam Chipman. 1-0 Ramblers
8:58 p.m. -- Mass confusion out there. Starzomski went to the penalty box and apparently Amherst was called for delay of game for a late line change at 3:31. Starzomski didn't explain the call to the Amherst bench, but went over to Miramichi's bench twice during the stoppage. Not the way to take charge of a hockey game.
9 p.m. -- Penalty is negated on a hooking call to Miramichi's Ryan Taylor at 4:10.
9:01 p.m. -- Amherst with the man advantage now as Nathan McQuaid runs into Waye at 4:44 and gets called for goaltender interference.
9:05 p.m. -- Teams back at even strength. Opportunity squandered there by the Ramblers.
9:06 p.m. -- Shane O'Byrne having a rough night, getting slammed into the boards by Sterling Bear on the rush. Too long a shift for the fourth line here, as Miramichi is all over Amherst. Mitchell O'Neill was out there for close to two minutes.
9:08 p.m. -- Starzomski with more questionable decision-making, asking Gallant to play the puck while flat on his stomach in front of his crease with two Ramblers bearing down on him.
9:09 p.m. -- Adam Chipman doubled over in pain, and is not moving his left arm. Scott Bragg goes after Sterling Bear, and gets two for unsportsmanlike conduct at 11:01. Fans letting Starzomski have it.
9:12 p.m. -- Chipman using his left arm to do up his chin strap, so he might have avoided major damage. He's back on the ice.
9:12 p.m. -- Timberwolves have tied it on a goalmouth scramble on the PP at 12:54. Kyle Lapenskie gets credit, from Sterling Bear and Bobby Christie. Miramichi with a delay of game call on another late line change following the goal, which is just silly. How much time do you need after a goal to change your line? 1-1
9:16 p.m. -- Penalty over. Ramblers PP is flat tonight.
9:17 p.m. -- Chipman has now gone to the dressing room, so there's defintely something amiss.
9:19 p.m. -- Josh Coleman with a good sequence, breaking up a play at the Amherst blueline to generate an odd-man rush.
9:20 p.m. -- 2:26 left in the period.
9:21 p.m. -- Miramichi carrying the play when it's five-on-five. Ramblers with not a lot of jump out there.
9:22 p.m. -- Mitchell O'Neill is drilled by Kyle Lapenskie near the Miramichi bench, and is slow to get up. Drew McLaughlin rushes in and he and Lapenskie go in the fourth fight of the night. Lapenskie has been sent to the dressing room. Miramichi bench jawing with Rambers fans at the far end of the rink.
9:24 p.m. -- It's a five-minute power play for the Ramblers. Lapenskie gets a match penalty plus five for fighting, and McLaughlin gets five for fighting at 18:41. The match will mean an automatic suspension.
9:26 p.m. -- Second period is over. Shots 14-7 Miramichi in the period, 24-15 Timberwolves in the game.
After 40 minutes -- Miramichi using its size to intimidate and wear down the Ramblers and the home team needs to make them pay where it counts, on the scoreboard. A goal on the major penalty is an absolute must.
9:42 p.m. -- Third period underway. Ramblers with 3:40 remaining on the major penalty, and need a goal in the worst way. Chipman is on the ice to start the period.
9:44 p.m. -- One minute left in the PP. Ramblers with zero shots on goal so far in the third.
9:46 p.m. -- Power play is over. Miramichi with a big kill, and the Ramblers looked just dreadful.
9:47 p.m. -- Miramichi has taken the lead as Waye can't snare a Sterling Bear wrister destined for the top corner at 4:26. Assist to Matt Bourdeau. 2-1 Miramichi
9:49 p.m. -- Thankfully Chipman didn't leave the game, as he has tied it at 4:57, and bowled over Gallant in the process as he charged the net at full speed. Jeremy Barron with the assist. 2-2
9:50 p.m. -- Waye has played well tonight, and flashes the glove on a rebound to stop a Timberwolves scoring chance.
9:52 p.m. -- Pace is picking up out there. Ramblers are capable of outskating this team and need to keep the game up tempo.
9:53 p.m. -- Miramichi captain Chris Owens just misses the short side after getting Waye to commit on a deke.
9:55 p.m. -- Chipman and Graham Dyck push and shove on a scrum. Starzomski letting them play now, as 20 minutes ago, that was probably coincidental minors.
9:56 p.m. -- Good effort by Scott Bragg to cause a turnover at the blueline and if he could've corralled a bouncing puck, he would've been in alone. Sequence draws a penalty seconds later, as Bobby Christie gets two minutes for hooking plus 10 more for yapping at 10:19.
9:58 p.m. -- Chipman in the middle of things again, getting dropped by Ryan Taylor in front of the Timberwolves net just as the play is blown dead. No call.
10 p.m. -- Penalty over. Ramblers just can't do anything on the man advantage.
10:01 p.m. -- Scott Bragg throws a punch away from the play and Starzomski spots it. Bragg goes off for roughing at 12:28.
10:03 p.m. -- Penalty over. Ramblers dodge a bullet there. Pace has slowed back down again with 5:25 left.
10:05 p.m. -- 4:15 left. Faceoff to Gallant's left. Shots 12-5 Miramichi in the third, 36-22 Timberwolves for the game.
10:06 p.m. -- Ramblers have taken the lead as Josh Coleman is in the right place at the right time with 3:57 to go. Chipman and Barron with the assists. 3-2 Ramblers
10:09 p.m. -- Two minutes to go.
10:10 p.m. -- Good work from Shane O'Byrne and Zach Carson down low in the Miramichi end to kill off some clock. Timberwolves call timeout with 1:15 left and the faceoff to Waye's right.
10:12 p.m. -- Miramichi pulls Gallant on the timeout. In the final minute now.
10:13 p.m. -- Puck deflected into the netting in the Amherst zone. Faceoff to Waye's right with 4.8 seconds remaining.
10:14 p.m. -- Jeremy Barron falls on the puck off the draw, and that sparks a mad scramble, allowing the clock to run out. Chipman called for cross-checking on the sequence. Shots 14-8 Miramichi in the period. 38-23 Timberwolves for the game.
Three stars -- 1. Adam Chipman; 2. Jon Waye; 3. Jeremy Barron. Could make a case for Luke Gallant or Sterling Bear at No. 3, but a minor quibble.
Final thoughts -- The captain led the way for the home side in this one, and heaven help this team if he goes down for any length of time. Good to see Bissonnette and Coleman contributing, but lack of offence still a major problem, as a handful of players are carrying this team. Waye with another solid effort, and is starting to show signs he's capable of winning games on his own.
