AMHERST - The Amherst Ramblers put in for overtime on their opening weekend in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League.
Last night, the Ramblers couldn't hang on to a 4-2 third-period lead, but Justin Matthews scored with 18.5 seconds left in overtime to edge host Bridgewater Lumberjacks 5-4.
Matthews stripped a Bridgewater player of the puck just inside the Lumberjacks blueline and went in alone for the winner to give the purple-and-white three of a possible four points on the weekend.
On Saturday, the Ramblers fell behind 3-0 just 12:15 after the opening faceoff, but rallied to salvage a point, losing 6-5 in a shootout to the Yarmouth Mariners at the Stadium.
"This weekend went exactly the way we thought it would," Ramblers head coach and general manager Corey Crocker said from Bridgewater.
"We had some jitters early Saturday but got better as the game went on and had our chances to win it. Bridgewater tried to intimidate us tonight in a small rink, but our guys didn't back down, and we were able to scratch and claw for a win."
Jeremy Barron, with two, Mitchell O'Neill and Kody Orr had the goals in regulation for the Ramblers last night. Jon Waye steered aside 27 shots between the pipes.
Adam Chipman led the way for the hosts Saturday with a goal and two assists, and was named the game's second star. Barron, Josh Coleman, Shane O'Byrne and Simon Bissonnette also scored. Every goal except for Coleman's came on the power play.
Waye made 36 saves, but was beaten on both chances in the shootout.
"Jon played well tonight (Sunday), and will only get more comfortable as the season goes on," said Crocker.
NOTES - Ramblers defenceman Eric Boudreau tweaked an ankle in practice last week and did not dress for either game. He's expected back this weekend ... Healthy scratches last night were Kodi Estey and Brandon Mercer. Sitting out Saturday were Greg Taylor and Jordie Shaw ... The Ramblers next home game is Saturday against the Pictou County Weeks Crushers at 7 p.m.

3 out of 4 sounds great but saturday nite why would the coach send out 2 players not known for their scoring abilities to shoot in the shootout when they have a number of others who can can 25-30 goals this season sitting on the bench - this kind of foolish moves will not build team chemistry - nor will it keep fans coming back - maybe the coach needs to have a talking to and or start listening to others with more hockey experience - just my opinion

3 out of 4 points is pretty darn good. On saturday night the Ramblers could have won but didn't look good in the shoot out.
Can't wait for Bridgewater to come to town on 19th, should be a real good season.

Well great to see the commenters starting to agree that this is an excellent team and will only get better as the season progresses, if the won every game then they should not be playing in the mjahl. A loss is a yardstick of measurement for where improvement is require.

Rambler Fan from Amherst, NS are you for real ? I give credit where it is due yes Barron has 3 goals but how many did he have last year ? 2 maybe ? and Orr is a checker not a scorer , ask the players -The team goal scorers what they think of Crockers choices and they all would tell you the same - Bissonnette , Matthews , Chipman were shaking their heads after the game - so maybe you should do your homework before you call anyone else uneducated.

Kody had a pretty nice shoot out goal when they played in Dieppe, did you see that one?

Let's be POSITIVE now...we've only finished game 2 and already there are critics Obviously we both want the Rams to do well and go far this year, negative comments towards the players shoot out skills really is not necessary. They are young adults who don't need this negativity in their lives. GO RAMS!

3 out of 4 points is fantastic and a great way to start the year! Way to go Ramblers. A few more games will surely help the boys gel and work together as a team. The first period Saturday was a bit shaky but it didn't take them long to build some chemistry. I am not sure who you would have preferred to coach to send out Ram's Fan...Barron and Orr are most likely going to lead the team in scoring this year and are already well on their way, check out the stats. Barron has 5 pts. already with 3 goals...if you don't want to come back to the games then don't, but stop being so negative... The last thing the boys need is to read an uneducated comment from a supposed fan. I am assuming you would have coached the game much better.
