AMHERST - The Ramblers have made their first big trade of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League season a week before it starts.
Amherst shipped its first-round pick in 2010 to the Campbellton Tigers and future considerations yesterday in exchange for 18-year-old defenceman Ryan Matheson, recently cut by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Halifax Mooseheads.
"He's a puck-moving defenceman who doesn't panic under pressure," Ramblers head coach and general manager Corey Crocker said.
"He's a kid who wants to play here and who we had high on our draft board two years ago. We still have 14 picks in the 2010 draft, so it really wasn't that high a price to pay."
The six-foot, 172-pound Gander, N.L., native played 10 games with Campbellton last season, recording one assist and six penalty minutes. He was used sparingly in Halifax, appearing in just four contests with no points and two penalty minutes.
The Ramblers edged the Dieppe Commandos 3-2 in an exhibition game last night in New Brunswick, with another Mooseheads prospect, Kody Orr, scoring the shootout winner. Jesse Colborne and Trevor Layton netted unassisted goals in regulation for the Ramblers. Colborne's came while shorthanded.
Devon Cudmore got the start in goal for Amherst, stopping all 14 shots he faced. Spencer Scott was peppered with 21 shots in the middle frame, allowing just one goal, and Tyler Ferdinand finished up, making nine saves in the third and didn't let a puck past him in the shootout.
These teams face each other Saturday in Amherst at 7 p.m., and Sunday in Dieppe at 2 p.m.
NOTES - The Ramblers dressed defenceman Yoann Mathieu last night. Mathieu, who played eight games with the QMJHL's Baie-Comeau Drakkar last season, picked up a pair of minor penalties. ... Forward Simon Bissonnette, cut by the Q's Lewiston Maineiacs, is expected in camp today. ... Defenceman Dylan Brake, Amherst's first-round pick, has yet to report to camp and Crocker expects his status to be cleared up this weekend.
