AMHERST - The Ramblers roster is starting to take shape.
Five players were released from the Maritime Junior A Hockey League team's training camp Wednesday, bringing the number of players in camp to 34, and the total number on the roster to 37.
Let go were goalie Julien Daigle, Amherst's fifth-round pick in the June entry draft, along with forwards Matthew Canning, Alex Berry, Marcus Manson and Corbyn Gallagher. The Ramblers have asked Berry, who is expected to return to the major midget Cape Breton West Islanders, to remain an affiliate player with the team.
That trims the roster to five goaltenders, 11 defencemen and 21 forwards heading into today's preseason road game against the Dieppe Commandos at 7:30 p.m.
"Our forward positions are starting to fill up," said Ramblers head coach and general manager Corey Crocker. "We're getting closer to a set roster, and we'll evaluate what we have further after Thursday."
Forward Simon Bissonnette has been released from the the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Lewiston Maineiacs, according to Crocker, and is expected to be in Amherst on Friday. Bissonnette did not play in Lewiston's preseason game against the Saint John Sea Dogs in Fredericton last night.
Forward Kody Orr made his return yesterday at practice, having left the Quebec league's Halifax Mooseheads' training camp Monday.
Defenceman Drew McLaughlin remains with the Western Hockey League's Edmonton Oil Kings. Forward Jonathan Pardy is recovering from shoulder surgery and is expected to return in October.
Invitee Derick Miles, who played junior B last season in Winchester, Ont., has yet to show up in camp because of injury, and Crocker is awaiting word on his availability.
The Ramblers have added six-foot-three, 175-pound defenceman Yoann Mathieu to their camp. Mathieu, 18, played eight games for the QMJHL's Baie-Comeau Drakkar last season, recording no points and nine penalty minutes.
Mathieu is on the dress list for tonight's game.
Amherst will use a more veteran-laiden lineup. The 12 forwards will be Orr, Justin Matthews, Scott Bragg, Zach Carson, Scott Lowe, Jesse Colborne, Jordie Shaw, Josh Coleman, Garrett Bell, Anthony Cummiskey, Trevor Layton and Kodi Estey.
The six defencemen are Mathieu, Wes Herrett, Brandon Mercer, Paden Lennie, Luke Warner and Greg Taylor.
Devon Cudmore, Spencer Scott and Tyler Ferdinand will share the goaltending duties.
Both teams iced all-rookie squads Tuesday in Amherst, with the Commandos jumping out to an 8-0 lead en route to an 8-3 victory.
