AMHERST - Amherst will be hosting the Basketball Nova Scotia Division 2 girls championship for the first time this weekend.
There are 120 players from 10 teams coming to Amherst to participate.
Amherst Sonics coach Gillian Ellis has confidence in her team's ability to capture the title. With a mixture of veteran and junior players they picked up the silver medal two weeks ago at the last qualifying tournament.
"A 24-game tournament is a marathon. Bantam girls basketball has a lot of contact, so whoever stays healthy and is best conditioned has a great chance," Ellis said.
"The girls have been working hard all year and showing great leadership."
Each of the teams will receive at least four pool games. The two teams with the best records in each pool will advance to the semifinals and medal rounds Sunday. Pool games will be played at E.B. Chandler and Amherst Regional High School. The medal games will be at ARHS.
