SPRINGHILL From the fields of Beaubasin to the Canso Causway, motorists will drive along Canadas newly minted Miners Memorial Highway.

Nova Scotia Minister of Highways an Infrastructure Renewal made the announcement Mon, Sept 8, alongside Tourism Minister for the province, Bill Dooks, Highway 104 will now be known as the Miners Memorial Highway, recognizing Nova Scotia mining heritage and its impact on communities across the province.

Making the announcement in his hometown of Springhill, which will remember this coming October the 50th Anniversary of the 1958 mining disaster which claimed the lives of 74 miners is a significant one, Cumberland South MLA Scott said.

Personally, being a Springhiller, making this announcement is so important to me, Scott said. Communities across this province have been affected by mining.

This tribute joins other highway designations including Peacekeepers Way, announced in August, and Veterans Memorial Highway. In the interest of safety, the highway will continue to be referred to as Highway 104 by emergency personnel.

Joining Scott in the announcement, Minister Dooks announced his department will contribute $25,000 towards events scheduled around the 50th anniversary of the mining disaster known around the world as The Bump, and an additional $15,000 to conduct a feasibility study into repairing one of the remaining mine buildings in Springhill. Should the study prove favourable, work could begin to restore the miners lamp cabin, which has been in a state of disrepair for years.

I think this is great, Herb Pepperdine said alongside Garnette Clarke.

Both men were trapped underground for days on end when The Bump occurred. The pair represent the remaining survivors who were trapped at that time.
