AMHERST - The Amherst Ramblers went into Tuesday night's Maritime Junior A Hockey League exhibition game against the Dieppe Commandos looking to assess several players for their training camp.
Players from last year's team making a positive impression were Adam Chipman and Doug Doyle. Both players scored the Ramblers goals in a 4-2 loss to Dieppe.
The Chipman goal came at 14:30 in the first period, giving the Ramblers a 1-0 lead.
Assisting on the goal were Trevor Layton and Jordan Escott.
That was the only scoring until 2:57 into the second period when the Commandos took control.
A goal at 2:57 came off the stick of Luc Cormier, then it was Marc LeBlanc and Willie Harvey adding two more for the visitors.
The second period was loaded with penalties with Amherst serving four to the Commandos' six.
At 6:25 into the third, the Commandos Denis Legace put his team up by a score of 4-1, then 23 seconds later the Ramblers' Doyle cut the Commando lead in half.
Assists on the goal came from Corbyn Gallagher and Trevor Sheen.
The third period was also penalty packed with the Ramblers serving four penalties to the Commandos' five. The Ramblers travel to Dieppe to play the Commandos on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, they return home for their fourth exhibition game against the Commandos.
Game time is 7 p.m. at Amherst Stadium.
The Ramblers also trimmed their roster last night, but cuts were still being finalized at press time.
