NHLers to participate?
AMHERST?- Corey Crocker has been a coach and teacher to many hockey players, some of who have gone on to the NHL stardom.
"Corey and the Ramblers are one of the main reasons for my recent signing with the Florida Panthers of the NHL," former Rambler Andrew Sweetland said. "The hockey school will set the foundation for skills needed to play at a higher level. What you learn off the ice is more valuable than anything else. I would recommend this hockey school to any player and I am excited to hopefully be coming back to help out with it."
Hockey players are now invited to get the same schooling Sweetland got from Crocker at the Amherst Junior A Rambler Hockey School that runs from Monday, Aug. 19, to Friday, Aug. 22.
"We'll have at total of 90 players and 10 goalies," Ramblers Coach Corey Crocker said. "And we'll cover all aspects of the game of hockey."
Those aspects will include passing, shooting, stick handling and team tactics.
"And we'll get into some body contact for those who are of age," Crocker added.
The players will also receive video analysis of themselves.
"We use the video so the players can critique their skills in a positive format," Crocker said.
Crocker and assistant coach Jeff Lewis will be there to help 12 instructors at the school, plus four guest instructors.
The guest instructors are Daniel Cleary of the Detroit Red Wings, Sweetland, UNB Varsity Reds head coach Gardner MacDougall and the L.A. Kings forward Teddy Purcell.
"Corey is an excellent teacher of the game," Purcell said. "Having him as a coach myself I would advise young players to attend this school and have fun with it."
He said if his schedule allows, he will be in Amherst during the week to help instruct and get to know the young hockey players.
"I hear great things about Amherst through Corey and I'm excited to get on the ice there," he added.
Besides NHL instructors there will also be Rambler instructors at the school. They are: Travis Turner, Adam Chipman, Matthew Squires, Andrew Flemming, Derek Smith, Jordan Escott, Tyson Aalders, Shane Robar, Erick Boudreau, Trevor Steen and Lee Denny.
Last year's hockey school was held in Springhill but this year's will be at Amherst Stadium.
"With the new upgrades to our rink we are really looking forward to having the hockey school in Amherst."
Last year some players didn't make it into the hockey school because of the deadline, "So I really encourage everyone to sign up early so they can get their registration secured," Crocker said.
Last year students came from as far away as Halifax to attend the school.
The timing of the Hockey school will allow the kids to hit the hockey season running.
"The timing of the school is perfect," Crocker said. "It's just before tryouts for rec leagues and minor hockey, so they'll go right from the Hockey School to the tryouts."
Cost per player is $280 and deposit of $150 will be needed by May 31, to secure a spot.
Registration is at Amherst Stadium on Thursday, May 29 and Tuesday, June 24.
For more information drop by the Rambler dressing room at the stadium or call Corey Crocker at 694-6036 or 661-0472 before 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
